West Shore RCMP seize loaded handgun during arrest of suspect in stolen vehicle

A 33-year-old man faces a number of charges after West Shore RCMP say he was found in Colwood in a stolen car with a loaded handgun.

They responded to a complaint of an unconscious man in the driver’s seat of black Mercedes Benz on Six Mile Road near Atkins Avenue around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 20th.

Officers confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen in Duncan two days earlier.

“Officers woke up the male suspect inside the stolen vehicle and attempted to arrest him,” said West Shore RCMP Cst. Nancy Saggar.

During the arrest the suspect began physically fighting officers and a loaded 9mm handgun fell out of the suspect’s waistband.

Cst. Saggar says no shots were fired but one of the RCMP officers did sustain a hand injury during the arrest.

RCMP say the suspect has been identified as 33-year-old James Wilkinson. He was remanded in custody and faces six charges including firearm-related offences and possession of property obtained by crime.
