Of the 18 Canadian flags on Jim Pungente's property in Fairfield, 15 of them were defaced.

A Fairfield resident arouse to some unpleasant messages left on his Canada Day decorations on Thursday.

Jim Pungente, who lives in Victoria’s Fairfield neighbourhood, has put up Canadian flags along his fence on Canada Day for the past three years without any problems.

But this time they weren’t received pleasantly by all.

On Thursday morning, he woke up to discover that 15 of the 18 flags on his property were defaced with messages that referenced the country’s colonial history.

Messages such as “You are on native land” and “K-K-K-anada” were spray-painted onto the flags.

“I’m not angry about what the damage was, but it’s just the idea that our flag was defaced on a day like Canada Day,” Pungente told CHEK.

Pungente said his home was not the only one in his neighbourhood that was targeted.
