Victoria Pride Week celebrations go virtual this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Victoria Pride Week runs until July 5.

Victoria’s Pride Week was supposed to kick off today with events happening throughout the city all week long.

But because of the COVID-19, this year’s celebrations will be looking a little different than usual.

The parade, festival and other in-person events such as the memorial drag ball game and Big Gay Dog Walk will not take place this year because of the province’s decision to ban large public events over the summer due to COVID-19.

But while in-person events may be cancelled, The Victoria Pride Society, which organizes the celebrations, has said many of the week’s events will continue in a virtual format, including the parade and the Big Gay Dog Walk.

Taking the place of the memorial drag ball game will be a documentary about the game’s history, which will premiere on Canada Day.

Pride Week runs from June 28 until July 5.
