A contract has been awarded for the design of the Crystal Pool and Wellness Centre replacement in Victoria.

HCMA Architecture + Design will provide architectural and engineering services and lead the next phase of planning for the new facility.

Victoria Council voted to replace the nearly 50-year-old Crystal Pool in February and approved a $69.4 million budget.

$10 million is committed from Victoria’s Building and Infrastructure Fund, with the balance of the cost being sought from external sources, including other levels of government.

The city says the HCMA consultant team has extensive experience in designing recreation facilities that are environmentally sustainable and accessible.

HMCA has completed more than $200 million worth of aquatic and recreation facilities and operates across Canada.

The proposed site for the new facility is beside the current facility in Central Park.

The new pool is slated to open in 2020.
