A frightening incident Monday for a small group of Vic High students who were assaulted with bear spray while off campus in the Fernwood neighbourhood.

In a letter to parents, the school says the students who were exposed received minor medical attention and that counselling is being offered to anyone who needs it. It doesn’t say where in Fernwood the attack was.

Victoria police say one youth was arrested at the scene and later released on conditions.

This is the latest in a string of pepper or bear spray-related incidents involving youth in the region.

In May, Victoria Police reported five pepper spray incidents with two weekends in a row of youth violence in Esquimalt.

On May 17, police were called to the 1100 block of Esquimalt Road for reports of someone who was pepper sprayed, and learned a youth was approached by another group of youth who then pepper sprayed him.

The weekend earlier, during Buccaneer Days, a 30-year-old woman in a mobility scooter was bear sprayed by a youth, and four teens were bear sprayed after a group fight.
