Truck with 5 occupants plunges into creek near Fanny Bay on Highway 19

A pickup truck with five occupants plunged around 20 metres into Cowie Creek off Highway 19 near Fanny Bay Sunday.

All occupants survived the crash that took place around 2 p.m.. Search and rescue crews from Arrowsmith and Comox Valley SAR assisted in getting the occupants to emergency crews.

Two adults were in the vehicle along with three younger passengers — the youngest was 12.

All were taken to multiple hospitals, with one being taken away by air ambulance.

Officials say the truck drove off onto the median, and fell from the opening in the centre of a bridge over the creek. The occupants were on their way back from tubing at Mt. Washington.

Southbound lanes on Highway 19 south of Cumberland between Buckley Bay Road and Hastings Road opened around 90 minutes after the crash.

A detour via Highway 19A was in place during the closure.
