The next generation of voters has spoken in the parallel election results from Student Vote Canada 2019.

And that result? A Liberal minority, which will have to seek the support of one or more other parties to build consensus.

The Liberal Party took 22.3 per cent of the popular vote and won 109 seats, with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau winning in his riding of Papineau.

The NDP took 24.8 per cent of the popular vote and 98 seats, with NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh winning in Burnaby South.

The Conservative Party took 25.0 per cent of the popular vote and 94 seats, with Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer won his seat in Regina-Qu’Appelle.

The Green Party took 18.2 per cent of the popular vote and 28 seats, with Green Leader Elizabeth May keeping her seat in Saanich-Gulf Islands.

And the Bloc Quebecois took 1.3 per cent of the popular vote and 9 seats, with Yves-Francois Blanchet being the only leader to not win his seat in Beloeil-Chambly.

More than 1.1 million elementary and secondary school students cast their ballots to coincide with the 2019 federal election as they learned about the electoral process.

The program, run by the non-partisan charity CIVIX and supported by Election Canada, offered students the opportunity to research parties and platforms, debate Canada’s future, and cast their ballots for the candidates running in their school’s riding.

“We are thrilled with the turnout for Student Vote Canada 2019,” says Taylor Gunn, President and CEO of CIVIX Canada. “We are grateful for all the teachers that dedicated time and energy to cultivating the next generation of voters.”
