Humble Salt Spring Island has been named one of the best 50 islands in the world to visit in 2024 by travel website Big 7 Travel.

The Southern Gulf Island is just one of three Canadian spots to make the list, and was ranked 24th out of the best 50 islands in the world.

It came out just ahead of Haida Gwaii, just north of Vancouver Island, which was ranked the 28th best island this year.

Salt Spring Island was praised for its laid-back lifestyle, as well as its natural landscapes.

“This groovy Gulf Island sees more sunshine than most of British Columbia thanks to its unique microclimate,” reads Big 7 Travel’s list.

“Floating in the shimmering Pacific Ocean between the mainland and Vancouver Island, Salt Spring was once home to a sizeable community of hippies and today it encapsulates chilled-out B.C.,” the list adds.

“The island is encircled by white sandy stretches and punctuated with pretty painted wooden houses, with terraced vineyards, organic farms and brilliant boutiques squeezed between.”

Prince Edward Island was the only other Canadian locale to claim a spot on the list, coming in as the 17th best island across the globe.

The number one spot went to Grenada, an island country located in the Caribbean.

Big 7 Travel highlighted the island’s historic beach towns, sprawling national parks, and the fact that the country is turning 50 this year as reasons why it’s the best island in the world to visit in 2024.

A little over a week ago, travel magazine Travel + Leisure also recognized B.C.’s West Coast, calling Vancouver Island the best island in Canada for the year.
