Nanaimo had 4 of the 10 most dangerous Island intersections in 2023; Saanich tops the list

ICBC has released its crash data for 2023, which found Nanaimo has four of the ten most dangerous intersections on Vancouver Island, while Saanich had the number one most dangerous spot.

New data from the insurance corporation released last week shows that four intersections in Nanaimo contributed to more than 250 crashes in 2023.

ICBC reported 40,343 crashes across Vancouver Island in 2023, and 10,985 of those crashes happened at intersections. Saanich was home to the most dangerous intersection with 86 crashes between Douglas Street and McKenzie Avenue.

The intersection and offramp areas between Island Highway North and Metral Drive and Mostar Road and Rutherford Road had the highest number of crashes at 73.

On the south island, Victoria and Langford made the list. Langford’s most dangerous section was between Millstream Road and the Highway 1 exit and entrance ramps.

The intersection where Gorge Road East, Douglas Street, Hillside Avenue and Government Street meet in Victoria reported 60 crashes in 2023.

Crashes on the rise

The number of car crashes on Vancouver Island is steadily rising to pre-pandemic numbers. In 2020 there were 32,643 crashes, down from 41,558 the year before.

But that number has risen slowly to now 40,343 crashes reported last year. The Lower Mainland still has the highest number of crashes in 2023, at 193,624.

For the first time since 2019, there have been more than 500 reported crashes involving cyclists. A total of 521 were reported last year, up nearly 100 from 2022.

However, pedestrian-involved crashes dropped to 356 last year from 404 in 2022.

Hit-and-run crashes have also risen on the Island. There were 6,589 hit-and-run crashes reported to the insurance corporation last year. That number slowly rose from 2020 when 5,998 incidents were reported.

In 2019., 7,418 hit-and-run incidents were reported.
