The BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) says a nurse in Campbell River has volunteered to abide by disciplinary terms following several “practice issues” that occurred between February and August 2023.

At the time, Keely Sherick was working in long-term care when she failed to adhere to some professional standards, including pronouncing death without an order, unsafe medication administration, failure to report a known medication error and failure to document controlled medication records appropriately, according to the BCCNM.

The college adds that Sherwick failed to follow facility procedures related to receiving and transcribing orders, and was not “collaborating effectively with members of the care team.”

On Sunday, the BCCNM said Sherick had agreed to several terms on her practice, including direct and indirect supervision over the next three months, a limit upon returning to work without a thorough orientation, and a ban on being the only nurse on duty – as well as providing supervision or orientation to other staff.

She also needs to complete remedial education on ethics, safe medication administration, professional accountability, and professional responsibility.

“The Inquiry Committee is satisfied that the terms will protect the public,” said the BCCNM on Sunday.
