West Shore RCMP says officers were called to a collision, and found a driver had crashed into a parked vehicle on Jun 16, 2024. Licence plate blurred by RCMP.

An impaired driver had been driving on the wrong side of the road before hitting a parked car in Langford, West Shore RCMP says.

RCMP received the call just before 8:40 p.m. on June 16, with reports saying there was a collision in the 1200 block of Nova Court in Langford.

When officers arrived, they found a 2007 BMW 335X crashed into the front of a parked 2022 Kia Carnival.

Video surveillance in the area provided to officers showed the driver of the BMW driving erratically and on the wrong side of the road before hitting the parked car.

The 26-year-old driver of the BMW was exhibiting signs of drug impairment, so officers conducted a field sobriety test, which he performed poorly.

Cannabis within the reach of the driver was found inside the vehicle.

The driver has been issued a 24-hour prohibition from driving, his vehicle was towed and impounded, and he was given tickets for driving without due care and attention and operating a vehicle while in personal possession of cannabis.

The driving charge comes with a $368 fine and six penalty points, while the cannabis charge comes with a charge of $230.

ICBC says after alcohol, cannabis is the most common substance found in impaired driving instances.

Every year, an average of 20 people die in crashes related to drug-impaired driving and ICBC says consuming cannabis within three hours of driving doubles your risk of crashing.
