Former President Donald Trump leaves the courthouse at Manhattan Criminal Court, Thursday, May 30, 2024, in New York.

Americans visiting Victoria say the guilty verdict for Donald Trump is unlikely to affect the upcoming election.

Trump was found guilty of 34 felony charges on May 30 related to a hush-money trial, making him the first former U.S. president to be convicted of felony crimes.

Buddy Kelly from Dallas says he doesn’t believe the verdict.

“I think it’s all made up,” he said. “Totally, I don’t think there’s any concrete in it at all and I don’t think it’s gonna stand.”

Anthony and Beth Ross say this will have an effect, but it will just make Trump’s base rally behind him.

“If anything, I think this will propel the Trump base even more and the independents to come out and support him even more,” Anthony said.

“I agree with that, I think people are not happy with the way things have been going in America and this will propel a change, I believe,” Beth said.

On the other hand, Jonathan Cohen and Cindee Howard who were visiting Victoria from New York said they were happy to hear the jury confirm what they already knew about Trump.

“We’re native New Yorkers and we knew that this guy, Mr. Trump, his history and background and his litany of issues with everybody, so this was finally a judge and jury of 12 New Yorkers that came up with something that was overdue for many reasons,” Cohen said.

Howard says she is concerned about potential backlash to the verdict.

“We are, of course, concerned about backlash. Justice has been served, it’s very, very exciting, but the people who support Trump have drunk the Kool Aid long ago,” Howard said. “They are firm in their decisions, and this may, sadly, only strengthen them in their misguided thoughts.”
