Central Saanich Police says drugs or alcohol impairment is not believed to be a factor in a crash on June 3, 2024 that knocked out power for over 1,000 people.

Hundreds in Central Saanich were without power overnight after a driver hit a hydro pole and then the vehicle caught fire, police say.

Central Saanich Police says around 7:50 p.m. on June 3, a driver hit a hydro pole in the 7700 block of East Saanich Road. The hydro pole was sheared in two and the vehicle caught fire.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle and is believed to have suffered minor injuries, but police were unaware of the full extent of the driver’s injuries.

In addition to the hydro pole, police say the driver hit two unoccupied parked vehicles, which also sustained minor damage.

Central Saanich Police says the investigation is ongoing, but alcohol or drug impairment is not believed to be a factor.

Power in the area was knocked out for 1,223 customers, according to BC Hydro. The power company had power restored around 9 a.m. Tuesday.
