Garage fire deemed suspicious in Port Alberni Wednesday morning

Port Alberni Fire says a suspicious fire Wednesday morning has been forwarded to police for further investigation.

Fire Chief Mike Owens says they responded to a call shortly after 8 a.m., where smoke was seen coming from a detached garage at a property in the 4700-block of Bute Street.

When firefighters arrived, they went inside the structure and encountered open flames, but knocked the fire down quickly and contained damage to the garage.

Owens says evidence found inside the structure led to the fire being considered suspicious.

There was one person inside a home on the property at the time of the fire, who was alerted by a neighbour.

Owens says there were no injuries.
