Elections Canada needs thousands of workers on Vancouver Island before Election Day

Elections Canada is on a hiring spree.

It needs thousands of workers to operate the polling stations, and advance polls until Election Day on Oct. 21.

That includes every electoral district on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the Sunshine Coast.

At an Elections Canada returning office in Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke, about 700 people will be hired over the course of the next few weeks for various jobs, including polling clerks and information officers.

Most electoral districts will also be hiring hundreds of people over the next few weeks.

Returning Officer with Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke Kerry Fedosenko said the push is on to get people in place.

“You need to be able to staff every poll. And you also need to have spares that can fill in if somebody takes sick before voting day, or during voting day. We also have to hire spares to be on stand-by,” Fedosenko said.

The job requirements are simply that you must be a Canadian citizen, and at least 16 years old. For more information, go to elections.ca, and click on “Jobs”.
