Fresh Air Cinema, an outdoor movie theatre company, announced that it has partnered with FortisBC to host a free pop-up drive-in movie theatre at the Cowichan Exhibition Park in North Cowichan on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6.

Free pop-up drive-in movie theatres are coming to Vancouver Island this month.

Fresh Air Cinema, an outdoor movie theatre company, announced that it has partnered with FortisBC to host a free pop-up drive-in movie theatre at the Cowichan Exhibition Park in North Cowichan on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6.

The company will be screening Disney’s Onward on June 5 and The Lion King (1994 version) on June 6. Gates will open for both showings at 8:15 p.m. and the movies will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m.

Entry is free or by donation, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to Nourish Cowichan, an organization that provides healthy in-school meals to children. Coastal Community Credit Union will match donations made up to $2,000, according to Fresh Air Cinema.

Fresh Air Cinema said the number of vehicles allowed to attend each show is capped at 50, in order to comply with provincial regulation. Attendees are also expected to remain in their vehicles during the showings unless visiting the restroom.

“In a time when we’ve had to adapt to physical distancing, and when so many families and friends have been forced to spend time alone in their homes, we’re excited to once again bring the joy of drive-in movies to families across the province,” Jason Bashnick, managing director, Fresh Air Cinema, said in a press release.

“Supporting Fresh Air Cinema is one of the ways we’re able to connect with and give back to the communities we serve,” added Alicia Hearn, program manager of conservation education and outreach, FortisBC. “While we typically use these opportunities to speak with people about energy conservation, we just want to focus on helping to provide a great opportunity for families to enjoy time together in a safe manner.”

The pop-up drive-in theatre event this coming weekend the Cowichan Valley is the first of a series of free drive-in theatres Fresh Air Cinema is planning on hosting in communities across Canada. The company’s next pop-up drive-in will be in Victoria on June 19 and 20. However, details regarding the exact location in Victoria and which movies will be playing have not been released yet.

Reservation tickets are required for all shows at the Cowichan Exhibition Park and will be available today at 5 p.m. on Eventbrite. For more information about how to get tickets and when new dates and locations will be added, please visit www.freshaircinema.ca
