Village of Cumberland Coun. Jesse Ketler is stepping down after a decade on Cumberland council.
Ketler first joined the council in November 2014, and said on Friday that she’s stepping down to focus on her personal life.
“Balancing the demands of council duties with my current personal responsibilities has become increasingly challenging, and I believe stepping down is the best course of action for both myself and the community we serve,” she said.
Cumberland Mayor Vickey Brown says she’s grateful for Ketler’s work over the past decade, highlighting her contributions to the village’s efforts protecting local wetlands and for her advocacy for affordable housing.
“I think I can speak on behalf of all of council and the community when I thank Jesse for her dedication to the village,” she said Friday.
“Jesse’s time at the council table can be characterized by her thoughtful deliberation, high standards, and wisdom that always served the community’s well-being.”
Ketler was also appointed director of the Comox Valley Regional Board from 2018 to 2023 and served as chair for four of those years.
Her resignation is effective June 30, 2024. A byelection to fill her vacant seat on council is expected to be held in September 2024. Nominations open in August.
“Since my election in 2014, it has been an incredible honour to work alongside such dedicated and passionate colleagues,” said Ketler. “Over the past decade, we have achieved remarkable milestones and navigated through significant changes, always striving to make Cumberland a better place for our residents.”
The next general election for the Village of Cumberland is scheduled for Oct. 17, 2026.
The Cumberland council table consists of four councillors and the mayor.
