Daniel Howard Ruygrok of Central Saanich has been charged with animal cruelty following an incident that caused serious injuries to a dog in January.

Central Saanich Police announced Jan. 12 they had arrested the 32-year-old when a four-year-old German Shepherd/Bernese Mountain cross suffered a compound fracture to its leg and face.

The incident happened in the 7100-block of West Saanich Road on the evening of Jan. 9.

Ruygrok appeared in court Thursday and was charged with one count of animal cruelty for willfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to a dog.

Ruygrok is currently not to have contact with the injured dog’s owner and is not allowed to possess or be alone with any animal.

His next court appearance is March 22.

A good Samaritan, who helped rescue the dog, came forward after the initial release to assist in the investigation.
