BC Transit is offering free rides across the Victoria Regional Transit system today, June 5, to mark Clean Air Day.

Clean Air Day first kicked off in 1999, as part of the federal government’s Canadian Environment week.

The goal was to have Clean Air Day raise awareness about air quality and climate change, and to encourage people to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

The federal government estimates that air pollution contributes to 17,400 deaths in the country annually.

“Air pollution harms wildlife, vegetation, and ecosystems,” reads the Clean Air Day website. “Air pollution, including wildfire smoke, knows no boundaries and, as we saw from the devasting effects of last year’s wildfires, it can affect all areas of Canada and into the United States.”

To mark Clean Air Day, BC Transit says all service in the Victoria region is free, including for handyDART customers.

More information about bus service in Victoria can be found on the BC Transit website.
