West Shore RCMP have arrested two alleged chronic shoplifters accused of multiple counts of theft.

Between January and March, RCMP investigated four reports of shoplifting from the Walmart located at 860 Langford Parkway, all of them involving the same two suspects.

Police say on each occasion, the suspects loaded up hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise and left the store without paying, with the latest incident taking place on March 1.

In that incident, a complainant notified police right away while the suspects were still in the Walmart parking lot pushing a cart full of unpaid merchandise toward their vehicle.

Officers found and arrested the suspects, recovering approximately $1,000 worth of stolen items in the cart.

Police also searched the suspects vehicle and seized just over two ounces of drugs suspected to be a combination of cocaine and methamphetamine.

A 50-year-old woman and 58-year-old man were arrested for multiple counts of theft under $5,000. Both were released on an undertaking with a court date in May.

“If you witness suspicious or criminal activity it’s essential to call police and report it right away. Do not attempt to stop the suspect on your own as this could be dangerous,” Cpl. Nancy Saggar said. “In the latest shoplifting incident with this pair of suspects, police were called immediately and were able to arrest them before they got away.”

RCMP say the investigation is ongoing and drug charges are also being considered.

Police say between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2023, RCMP investigated 514 reports of shoplifting under $5,000 in the West Shore, a 29 per cent increase from the 400 investigations for the same time period the year before.
