The crash occurred Wednesday afternoon.

RCMP say two people are dead after a crash at a luxury race track in B.C.’s Interior.

Mounties say the single-vehicle crash involved a sports car and occurred on Wednesday around 5:30 p.m. at the Area 27 Motorsports Park.

The driver and a passenger in the car were participating at a private event at the luxury race track and “failed to navigate a turn,” causing them to crash into a cement barrier at a high rate of speed, according to police.

“Tragically, both the driver and passenger succumbed to injuries they sustained,” said Cpl. James Grandy, a spokesperson for the BC RCMP.

“Criminality is not believed to be a factor, and the matter is now being investigated by the BC Coroner Service,” he said in a release Thursday.

Area 27 describes itself as an exclusive, luxury members-only motorsports club that incorporates the natural environment of the Okanagan into its track design.

In a statement to The Canadian Press, the motorsports club said the driver was experienced but appeared to lose control in the braking zone for Turn 1.

The statement says it’s unclear what the root cause of the crash was and the company is sending its deepest sympathies to the victims’ families, friends, and the motorsports community.
