Saanich police say a driver has been charged with dangerous driving, among other offences, after he filmed himself going almost triple the speed limit on the Pat Bay Highway earlier this month.
Police say the driver, a 24-year-old Saanich man, was racing to speeds up to 219 km/h in the 80 km/h zone.
He was allegedly weaving in and out of traffic on the Pat Bay (Highway 17) and passing other drivers on the shoulder, according to police in a news release Monday.
The driver was behind the wheel of a green Mercedes, and police say a video posted on social media on June 9 showed the car reaching the high speeds.
In the video, the driver appears to be travelling southbound and accelerating to 219 km/h near the Quadra Street exit.
‘Dangerous and reckless’
Saanich police say the car’s owner, who was not the driver when the video was taken, has come forward and is cooperating with the investigation.
“The driver’s actions were dangerous and reckless. Lives of other motorists and road users were put at a heightened and unnecessary level of risk,” said Chief Const. Dean Duthie.
“Behaviour like this will not be tolerated on our roads.”
Police say the driver was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving without a valid license and driving while using an electronic device.
He’s scheduled to appear in court in July.
