The Comox Valley RCMP is expanding its foot patrol program in the City of Courtenay, following an initial trial last year.
In 2023, the Comox Valley RCMP launched a dedicated foot patrol initiative in the city’s downtown area between May and September.
The goal was to have Mounties take a “community-oriented policing approach,” which would allow officers to connect directly with residents and business owners to address safety concerns and offer crime prevention tips.
“Having police officers in high-traffic areas can deter criminal activity and provide an opportunity for them to address concerns and offer assistance,” added RCMP in a social media post Tuesday.
Now, RCMP say the program is back, and it’s starting one month earlier this year.
“We are building on the positive feedback and enthusiasm from the public last year,” said Const. Monika Terragni, media relations officer with the Comox Valley RCMP. “This year, there are increased hours and the patrols are starting in April, instead of May.”
Officers on foot will soon begin walking in high-traffic areas in Courtenay, including downtown, at local parks and trails, and in other public spaces.
In addition to helping deal with crime, RCMP hope the foot patrol initiative helps foster a sense of trust and rapport between police and the community.
