A man who was previously charged with aggravated assault in a fatal stabbing in Victoria has now also been charged with murder, according to Victoria Police.

On March 31, officers were called to the 700 block of Pandora Avenue and arrived to the scene where one man was deceased and another had non-life-threatening injuries.

Robert Travers has now been charged with murder for the stabbing in downtown Victoria and remains in custody pending a court date.

Travers had been taken into custody at the scene and had been charged on April 2 with one count of aggravated assault for the victim who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither of the charges has been proven in court.

The manager of the Ocean Island Inn, a hostel, told CHEK News the victim taken to hospital was one of their employees.

Jessica Haberl was a guest at the hostel at the time and, in an interview with CHEK News, recalled being told by police that she wasn’t allowed in or out of the building.

“One room on the fourth floor was all cordoned off, and there were a few officers there. That was the most that we could see,” she said.

This was one of seven stabbings that occurred within one month in downtown Victoria, though VicPD said those numbers weren’t higher than in previous years.
