The outage affecting online payments of businesses, including BC Ferries, using Moneris Gateway have been resolved.

Moneris is a payment processing system used in Canada.

Shortly after 5:01 p.m. ET (2:01 p.m. PT) it reported there was an outage with its Moneris Gateway, which is its online payment system.

“Moneris is currently experiencing issues affecting the Moneris Gateway,” Moneris said in a statement on its website. “We are working to restore services and normal business should resume shortly.”

Then an hour later, Moneris reported the issue had been resolved.

“All systems and networks are operating normally,” a subsequent statement said.

BC Ferries reported that its online payment system was affected by the outage.

In recent months, Moneris has experienced a number of outages, including one three days before Christmas, which had impacts on businesses in what is typically the busiest period.

“If somebody can’t complete a transaction and walks out of the store, the risk is that they don’t come back to complete that transaction when the technology is up and running and that they will either go somewhere else or maybe even go online,” Jeff Bray, CEO of the Downtown Victoria Business Association told CHEK News on Dec. 22, 2023.

“This is a really make-or-break part of the year for most retailers, especially smaller, independent businesses, so any kind of interruption to the transactions is concerning.”
